How and when to use the French pronoun “Y”? In this episode, I’ll cover aspects that you may not be aware of : “y” isn’t only a place pronoun! Also, I’ll explain where to position this French pronoun in a sentence and of course will give you many examples!

Nous allons au cinéma = we’re going to the movies
Nous y allons = we’re going there
Les enfants sont à l’école = The children are at school
Les enfants (ils) y sont = The children (they) are there
Le téléphone est dans mon sac = the phone is in my bag
Le téléphone y est = the phone is there
Je vais aller au parc = I’m going to go to the park
Je vais y aller = I’m going to go there
J’y vais = I’m going / I’m leaving
Allons-y ! = Let’s go !
Penser à = to think about
Je pense à mes prochaines vacances = I’m thinking about my next holidays
J’y pense = I’m thinking about it
L’employé pense à changer de travail = The employee thinks about changing job
Il y pense = He’s thinking about it
Il réfléchira à une solution = He’ll think about a solution
Il y réfléchira = He’ll think about it
Réponds au téléphone! = Answer the phone!
Réponds-y = Answer it !
Je pense à mes amis = I’m thinking about my friends
Je pense à eux = I’m thinking about my friends
Je pense à ma famille = I’m thinking about my family
Je pense à elle = I’m thinking about it
Réponds au professeur! = Answer to the teacher
Réponds-lui = Answer him !
